OUR HISTORY

Berry Home Centers, Inc. has its roots in a family business founded in 1939 by Chilhowie entrepreneur Fount W. Berry. At that time, F.W. Berry Produce Co. bought and sold produce, scrap metal, herbs and other goods from local farmers and traders. In the 1950s the Berry family expanded with a dry goods and grocery store in the same block of Main Street where Berry Home Centers operates today. Following Mr. Berry’s death in 1968, Berry Enterprises, Inc. was founded by his daughter and two sons who continued to operate Berry Iron and Metal Company (formerly F.W. Berry and Sons Produce) and began developing residential subdivisions in Chilhowie, Seven Mile Ford, and Marion, Virginia.

After several years of building homes, the Berry family opened Berry Builders and Supply in 1973. The Chilhowie store on Whitetop Road was the area’s first full-scale building materials supplier and truss manufacturer. In 1977 the Berry Family opened a second store on Main Street in Abingdon, Virginia.

Tom Bishop, a grandson of F.W. Berry who grew up working in his family’s businesses, purchased the majority interest in the company in 1986. In that same year, the Chilhowie store relocated across the railroad tracks to its current home on Main Street and the company was renamed Berry Home Centers.

In 1996, the retail location in Abingdon was replaced with a state of the art lumberyard, indoor warehouse, and showroom at Ole Berry Drive near exit 14. The building’s architecture recalls the Main Street building in Chilhowie, which was completely renovated in 2000. In addition to housing a full-service lumberyard and retail operation, the Chilhowie location serves as headquarters for the company’s offices and accounting departments.

Under the guidance of Tom and Kyra Bishop, the company continues to offer the best in traditional building supplies in addition to the latest, cutting edge building technology. The fourth generation of the Berry family joined the team at Berry Home Centers when Tom and Kyra’s daughter, Leslie Brewer, and her husband Chris Brewer moved back to Chilhowie to become part of the family business in 2008. Chris and Leslie are invested in continuing to build and grow the company for the future.
